As Europe strives to wean itself off fossil fuels, a task made more urgent by the need to reduce its reliance on Russian energy, questions regarding the practical implementation of hydrogen’s ecological potential assume the front. According to gas distributor SPP-D, a pilot project in the Slovak village of Blatná nad Ostrovom demonstrating the safe and effective distribution of hydrogen in existing pipelines with just modest modifications had positive results. The initiative was initiated by SPP-D in mid-June, and trials will continue through September. If they continue to generate positive results, the distributor expects to blend 5% hydrogen with natural…
Leaders of a South Korean advanced technology company are in the state of West Virginia to meet with economic development officials, university researchers, and state and federal representatives to discuss potential sites for a hydrogen gasification facility that would produce green energy from forest, plant, and plastic waste. John Kyung, founder and chief executive officer of Plagen Co., Ltd. in Seoul, recently met with Mitch Carmichael, secretary of the West Virginia Department of Commerce, staff from U.S. Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, and local economic development officials from Kanawha, Monongahela, and Jefferson counties. There could be as many…
Jurong Port, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific (MHI-AP), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and JERA Asia, a subsidiary of JERA, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore establishing a 100% ammonia direct combustion power plant on Jurong Island, Singapore, which is home to the nation’s chemical and energy industries. Under the terms of the MOU, a collaborative research will be conducted in which a 60MW class gas turbine combined cycle plant fueled by 100% ammonia will be established to generate carbon-neutral power and boost ammonia demand in preparation for future ammonia bunkering. This Memorandum of Understanding is…
Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and Miawpukek First Nation (MFN) in Newfoundland and Labrador have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), clearing the way for the two to collaborate on a projected hydrogen project on the island section of the Canadian province. In and around Stephenville, St. George’s, and Channel-Port-aux-Basques, FFI’s Project Lynx could produce 700,000 to 900,000 tonnes of green ammonia yearly and generate up to 2,000 employment in the province. The Memorandum of Understanding represents a major step forward for the proposed project. “We are very pleased with FFI’s approach to development in Newfoundland,” said Chief Mi’sel Joe. “We…
Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to study the feasibility of developing green hydrogen production in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The memorandum of understanding signed by FFI, New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), The General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and The Sovereign Fund of Egypt for Investment and Development (TSFE) demonstrates the parties’ commitment to becoming leaders in renewable energy production and taking steps toward the production of green hydrogen in Egypt. The Sovereign Fund of Egypt Chief Executive Officer Ayman Soliman said “Our green hydrogen…
Toyota Motor North America (Toyota) is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to construct, install, and assess a 1-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power generation system at NREL’s Flatirons Campus in Arvada, Colorado. This three-year, $6.5 million cooperation is partially sponsored by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office and supports DOE’s H2@Scale vision for clean hydrogen across many applications and economic sectors. Multiple Toyota fuel cell modules are integrated into the 1 MW fuel cell system to produce responsive stationary electricity. NREL…
The Port Authority of A Coruña held this morning an event in Avenida de la Marina to present the pilot experience of a bus powered by renewable hydrogen, within the framework of “A Coruña Green Port”. The test runs with passengers will start tomorrow, Tuesday, on line 1 of the urban transport of A Coruña, operated by Compañía de Tranvías, also integrated in this project. The president of the Port Authority, Martín Fernández Prado, wanted to thank both Compañía de Tranvías and the companies Repsol, Enerfín and Caetano for their participation in this pioneering experience in the ports of Galicia,…
The Portuguese company CONVERGE!, based in Evora, will lead the first international research project on prospection and use of natural hydrogen as a new energy source, the HyAfrica, funded by the European Union, it was revealed today. The project, starting this month and lasting three years, is led by CONVERGE!, a spin-off from the University of Évora (UÉ)and based at the Alentejo Park of Science and Technology (PACT), but involves eight other partners. HyAfrica “aims to estimate the resources in natural hydrogen in promising regions of Morocco, Mozambique, South Africa and Togo and assess their socio-economic impact for local communities,”…
Crown Estate Scotland has allocated three new areas in the North Sea, east of the Shetland Islands, for the construction of floating wind farms. The areas complement the massive investment in offshore wind energy announced by the ScotWind project earlier this year. In the process, seventeen projects were initially announced. With the three additional areas, ScotWind would build out an offshore capacity of 27.6 gigawatts. Energy Security In January of this year he ScotWind already announced seventeen projects for offshore wind energy. These mentioned a capacity of 24.8 gigawatts, with floating wind farms to represent a capacity of almost 15.1…
Everfuel declared its intention to construct a hydrogen hub in Holstebro, Denmark, to assist regional energy transformation and expedite the scale-up of green hydrogen as an emission-free fuel for industry and transportation. With the intention of generating a safe, dependable, and efficient local source of renewable energy, the hub will be created in two phases in close collaboration with industrial and mobility partners. “The hub-concept represents a novel approach to scaling green hydrogen. It offers a strong value proposition for industry, the transport sector and municipalities, which is evident in the partner set up we can announce today,” says Jacob…
