Europe has nuclear tensions. Because the EU focuses on this low-carbon technology’s hydrogen role. Berlin wants to link nuclear with hydrocarbons despite its negligible climate impact. He won’t label nuclear-produced hydrogen “green.” After Fukushima, Germany decided to phase out nuclear power more than a decade ago. 100% renewable energy by 2030, up from 40%. France wants to generate “green” H2 using its low-carbon nuclear reactor mix. Agnès Pannier-Runacher wants hydro, wind, photovoltaic, and uranium fission included. Almost 96% of Europe’s energy is generated by steam reforming the methane molecule (CH4) in gas, which generates 9 to 10 kg of CO2…
Abengoa Innovation has completed commissioning and FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests) of the Grasshopper project’s demonstration plant, which uses hydrogen fuel cells to produce sustainable energy. The final milestone was the relocation of this pilot plant from Abengoa Innovation’s test facilities in Seville, where commissioning, start-up, and FAT testing were accomplished, to the Netherlands, where final testing will take place. In its final site, chlor-alkali plant surplus hydrogen will be used. Abenewco, which now holds the major assets of Abengoa SA after its liquidation, reports that the pilot plant was transferred by land. At its final destination, SAT or Site Acceptance…
For the purpose of creating a green hydrogen project in Canada, Charbone inked an MOU with the Port of Baie-Comeau and the City of Baie-Comeau. The project entails the installation of Charbone’s green hydrogen generation and distribution systems with an initial capacity of at least 0.5 MW in the Baie- Comeau industrial port zone. The City also has its own electrical distribution network, which will make it easier to incorporate a modular plant with the potential for capacity increase and export outside the region. The parties expect the Final Agreement to place primary emphasis on the development of a regional…
First shown outside of Poland, Polish Pesa’s H2 hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive made its international debut at InnoTrans. The locomotive can run for 15 hours without needing to refuel, and it has a 650kW power output. The European Union approval procedure has begun. Pesa and Polish fuel refiner Orlen inked a collaboration agreement during the event’s presentation ceremony, allowing the locomotive to be offered with a hydrogen refueling station. Pesa can construct three hydrogen locomotives annually at now, but this number might be increased to satisfy demand. It will take about two years to manufacture one car.
Windcat Workboats, in conjunction with its joint venture partners TSM and FRS, has acquired an order for six hydrogen-powered vessels to be delivered by 2024. This purchase is in response to Windcat Workboats and CMB.TECH’s May 2022 introduction of the Hydrocat 48, the world’s first hydrogen-powered CTV. After delivery, Vestas conducted trials with the ship. Four MK3.5H2 series vessels, two of which will be delivered in 2022 and two in 2023, are among the six additional hydrogen-powered vessels. The next ship in this series will be used by the company’s joint-venture partner, FRS Windcat, in the German offshore sector. The…
To lay the groundwork for an environmentally friendly hydrogen energy industrial metropolis, Gyeongbuk Pohang City has committed to vigorously promoting the hydrogen city project. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has awarded the city 1 billion won as part of the “2023 hydrogen city assistance project.” Hydrogen City is a demonstration project that uses hydrogen as an energy source in the housing and transportation sectors—the backbone of urban life—to showcase technologies like fuel cells, hydrogen charging stations, hydrogen electric vehicles, and integrated operation platforms. There will be a total investment of 41.6 billion won (20 billion won from the…
Distilling Ultra Pure Water reduces cost of electrolyzing green hydrogen at sea, says WUR
The expenses of producing green hydrogen via electrolysis at sea can be decreased by distilling Ultra Pure Water (UPW) on site, according to Wageningen University & Research. Ultra-clean water is needed to convert wind into green hydrogen. Next, suitable partners will test this concept on a larger scale (0.5-1 MW) offshore. Researchers demonstrated on Texel how to create ultra-pure water from seawater using residual heat from electrolysis (for hydrogen production). Membrane distillation to produce clean seawater isn’t new. WUR claims the technique involves a lot of heat and energy, therefore it’s not the greatest for many applications. To run smoothly,…
The Chinese government has gotten ahead of the game by developing and producing electrolysis systems, a crucial technology for the creation of environmentally friendly hydrogen. Chinese firms can build electrolysis systems a third less than, say, the United States because of their lower labor and more advanced production and supply chain. BloombergNEF estimates that the cost of implementing a similar electrolysis system in the United States and Europe would be over $1,200 per kilowatt, while the Chinese system would be closer to $343 per kilowatt. Since electrolysis facilitates the decomposition of water, which consists of two hydrogen atoms and one…
easyJet has outlined its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. A crucial component of this progression is the Airbus A320neo family. easyJet gained consent from its shareholders to place a sizeable order for A320neo series aircraft this summer. The fleet upgrade’s main objectives are lower pollutants and fuel usage. By 2029, 168 orders must be completed by the company. Additionally, easyJet has invested money in the Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) and Descent Profile Optimisation (DPO) technologies, which, when applied to the fleet as a whole, will permanently save 1% on fuel. The upgrade is anticipated to reduce annual carbon emissions by 88,600…
Protium is increasing the capacity of its Tees Valley Net Zero hydrogen project by 30MW, bringing the total output to approximately 70MW. In the UK’s northern east, on the Wilton Universal Group location, the corporation has been working on a green hydrogen project since last year. Once completed, Protium’s hydrogen production facility will offer local firms with the infrastructure needed to produce renewable green hydrogen energy. Teesside’s largest PEM electrolyser will be supported by the creation of a green hydrogen storage facility, which will help local manufacturers and logistics firms make the switch from natural gas and diesel. When completed…
