ESA, the French space agency CNES, and a collection of corporate and academic partners have launched an ambitious initiative to reduce CO2 emissions from orbital launches by developing infrastructure to enable a hydrogen economy at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. The initiative, known as HYGUANE (HYdrogène Guyanais A Neutralité Environnementale), aims to create a prototype plant within the Spaceport that is capable of producing 130 tons per year of so-called “green hydrogen,” with the aim of reducing Spaceport greenhouse gas emissions by a significant margin. The idea hinges on replacing “grey” hydrogen, which is created by a widely used but…

According to Alpine’s chief executive officer, the automaker’s future models may have a hydrogen combustion engine. The internal combustion engine has been replaced by the hydrogen engine. While European ministers have recently approved the termination of combustion engine sales beginning in 2035, the hydrogen combustion engine could save manufacturers who are increasingly interested in this alternative. Toyota is now testing the technology in a hydrogen-powered Corolla racing car, and Hyundai is developing its first engine for heavy-duty vehicles. The sports brand of Renault is also “very interested” in the topic. Alpine revealed a hydrogen-powered supercar concept built by students at…

Hyundai is the first hydrogen-powered “road cleaning car” in the world. The engine and the cleaning motor are both hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles. Hyundai is ahead of the curve and will capture the Blue Ocean market for eco-friendly specialty vehicles. Changwon City, Gyeongnam, will receive medium-sized hydrogen road cleaning vehicles from Hyundai in the second half of this year. Based on a medium-sized hydrogen cleaning car (living garbage collection car) that has been in demonstration operation for the past year, we have created a hydrogen road cleaning car since the previous year. The hydrogen cleaning vehicle is equipped with two…

As a result of the EU’s tighter climate goals, “green” hydrogen demand is exploding. Increasingly, industrial groupings are cooperating to increase production of this adaptable energy carrier, which has thus far been generated in tiny quantities from renewable sources. Siemens Energy, a German power engineering company, and Air Liquide, a French industrial gas supplier, announced on Thursday that they would expand their relationship to develop electrolysers in a joint venture. The two parties had signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard the previous year and announced a first minor project for 30 megawatts (MW) in Oberhausen. Through the recently…

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has invented a novel hydrogen fuel cell that is not only the world’s most durable1 to date, but also more cost-effective, paving the way for a wider application of green energy in the pursuit of a carbon-free world. The hydrogen fuel cell is a viable sustainable energy solution since it creates electricity without emitting carbon dioxide, particulate matter, or other air pollutants that can cause smog and other health issues. Despite its environmental benefits and years of development, the hydrogen fuel cell has not yet achieved widespread commercialization. This is due…
